Subject: 386MAX installing problems.
Hi. I have a big problem with 386MAX V6.01. Well when I have installed
the memory manager and boots my computer it wont work. It just reboots
my computer as soon it reads the config.sys file:
device=c:\386max\386max.sys pro=c:\386max\36max.pro <-- reboots right
here!
I can't figure out the problem, I have made some changes in the profile
file and so on, but it wont help. It just reboots as soon as the memory
test is over. I am bit suspicios about my SCSI controller. I have
excluded some memory, where the controllers' bios is: c8000-d000, but
it wont help. My computer configuration is :
486DX-50 Mhz. 8+256kB cache EISA
16MB Ram
Seagate 3283A 240MB SCSI Harddisk
UltraStor24F EISA Cache Controller
The Motherboard is Micronics ASIC, and the BIOS is Phoenix 1988 I hope
there is experienced 386Max Users, that can help with my problem.
Thanks...

Subject: 486 memory parity error -summary
I wish to thank all all of the respondents to my initial request for
help. The following sums up my conclusions, which could=20 be helpful
for others on the list.
1. Hardware / Software ?
Jim Ritterbusch, Bill Ryan, Kris Lebacq and Steve Rimar were convinced
tha= t a faulty memory chip was to blame.=20
I ran Checkit overnight. Without EMM386 driver Checkit didn't report
any=20 problems. (Which would leave a hardware error possibility only
in UMB between 640k-1024 k memory range as far as I understand it.)
2. MS-DOS/DR-DOS dependent ?
Thaddeus P. Bejnar has similar problems with his 486-33 computer. The
setup was very different, using DR-DOS:
>I also have a 486-33 and am experiencing the same problems with
>?random? "Parity error" especially in Windows in graphics programs.
[...]
>My feeling is that it is a memory allocation problem. The
>following is a wild guess. Something is writing to a given memory
>location without letting the appropriate system "know" it. When
>something else uses that location the Parity Error occurs." I do
>not know enough about the nature of memory or the memory allocation
>control systems in BIOS (or elsewhere) to know if this is a real
>possibility. It is just a feeling. It could just as well be a bug
>in the BIOS, so far as I know.
Thaddeus put me on the track of QEMM.
3. QEMM as a diagnostic tool
Installing QEMM I still encountered memory errors, but also system=20
crashes with "QEMM has encountered an illegal instruction...".
At Simtel and its sisters a public directory is called QTRDECK. I
retrieved a number of help-files. Working systematically through the
flowcharts in QEMMWI.ZIP, cleaning up the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
and returning TSR's one at the time I found removing a virus-scanner
solved the "illegal=20 instruction" problem.=20
Windows was still crashing when starting a non-windows word-processor.
Adding=20 the "nvr" vlag on QEMM386.SYS solved this problem.
Checkit noted thet the area F000-FFFF was used by QEMM and by the
system-ROM.
Excluding troublesome areas from QEMM386.SYS and testing I got to a
point I could not reproduce the "memory parity error" any more!
4. Present setup - no memory parity errors
The CONFIG.SYS is now:
DEVICE=3D\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS ram noems nvr x=3DF000-FFFF=20
DEVICE=3D\dos\setver.exe
DOS=3DHIGH

buffers=3D30

STACKS=3D0,0
DEVICE=3Dc:\qemm\loadhi.sys /r:2 sjdriver.sys

and the AUTOEXEC.BAT:

c:\qemm\loadhi /r:2 smartdrv
c:\qemm\loadhi /r:2 doskey

5. Conclusions:
- I am still not sure if this is hardware or software....
- My guess is that memory address conflicts caused the trouble
- The Microsoft documentation isn't helpful in these cases.
- The QEMM documentation and especially the flowcharts on Trickle=20
are very helpful.
- Windows lacks diagnostic tools. Crashes as "memory parity error.=20
system halted." without even giving an address of the memory at fault
[?] and "application has violated ...etc." shouldn't happen.

Subject: DOS Settings
i have a 486-33 system running with a swap file/virtual memory. is it
possible to create a ram-disk in memory and place the swap file into
the ram-drive? i ask because i have a disk compression program that
will compress the ram-disk. the end result would be more real disk
space and a doubly large ram-disk due to compression. i have tried
several times to get this to work but windows will not aknowledge the
ram-drive for the swap file.
any suggestions?

Subject: Geographic Coordinates
I'm trying to build a data file of cities or towns and their geographic
coordinates (you know, the old latitude-longitude thing with degrees,
minutes, seconds).
I've looted a Pascal flight navigation program, and an astrology
program, and a grid coordinate conversion program .. and that's all the
locations I can find (a measly several hundred of them).
Can anyone point me to a *big* source, with lots and LOTS of cities or
towns? (International is OK, but I'm mostly interested in the USA.)
Free, of course .. like from an anonymous ftp site. If the data is
imbedded in a weirdly formatted data file .. well, that's ok too: I can
usually figure them out and extract what I need. So it doesn't *have*
to be plain ASCII.
I've checked out a bunch of map-drawing programs (like in the SIMTEL20
archives), but they seem to only have the outline coordinates of
countries and other geographic features. No coordinates for the cities
and towns that lie within.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: HELP: Software to embed audio in text
To run an experiment, I need some software that will quite simply
allow me to embed audio as part of the structure of a text document.
What I want to do is play the audio when the user scrolls past that
part of the text. They should not have to launch sounds with a mouse
click, etc. This is intended for blind users who won't be using a
mouse, but will (perhaps) be listening to the text (and audio cues)
through sound output.
I'd rather not code this up myself (even if I knew how) if something
exists out there that would suit my needs.
Thanks to anyone who can help...

If the cable that connects them to the controller has a twist in it,
then both drives need to be set to the same physical drive number,
typically drive 1. If the cable does NOT have a twist in it, then the
one that is to be drive "C" should be set to be drive 0 and the other
one should be set to drive 1. This is usually accomplished by a jumper
block located near the cable connectors.

Subject: Help on 486PC problem
I am having trouble with my 486 PC machine. I was wondering if anyone
can shed some light on the matter.
The program is that my two floppy drives (5|1/4 and 3|1/2) failed
*simultaneously* during a machine-to-machine file transfer done by a
friend of mine. My PC since ceased to read data from either of the
floppy disks--screaming 'data reading error' for a formated disk and
'general reading error' for a unformated disk.
The machine, under DOS 3.3, is working as usual on hard disk. But I can
neither read or directly reboot from floppy drives. I have looked at my
CMOS configuration at the booting point, the disk configurations are
correct.
I firmly believe that the problem lies in software or configurations as
I can hardly believe that both drives physically failed at the same
time when no violent physical impact was experienced by the PC.
If you have any idea or advice on how to locate the problem of my PC
properly, please give me some suggestions---big or small, complete or
incomplete--all of them will be greatly and equally appreciated.
Thank you very much for your efforts

Subject: IBM Value Point Impressions
I've worked with some of the ValuePoint models, though mostly the 433dx
and 466dx2. They're very well-made and if you want strict AT- bus
compatibility, you get it (IBM's is the only "true" AT-bus).
There's certainly no reason to not buy from IBM since they're really
turned around and have become really service-oriented (at least in
Canada).
Now, for your specific point:
> 1) Performance. How does it run against a similar Gateway?
You can't fairly compare this. The new Gateways are all local-bus
based and have additional enhancements for the old "speed at any cost"
routine. If you can wait a bit (like 2 months), IBM has announced new
ValuePoint models which do have VESA local bus slots and local bus
adapters for disk and video. If you really do want a comparison, the
ValuePoints are faster (relative perception) than the old non-VLB
Gateway 486dx/33.
> 2) Maintenance. What does it cost for common replacement parts like
>floppy drives.
I don't know since the installations only use 3.5 inch drives and none
of the machines are 1) broken or 2) off warranty. You could ask IBM
Direct for a price but since the floppies are made by Sony and Toshiba,
there shouldn't be too much of a problem. Anyway, these things have a
3 year parts/labour warranty.
> 3) Expandability. Can you add another hard drive easily. Can you
>swap the existing hard drive easily? Does it take standard SIMMS or
>are they some- thing special from IBM?
Yes to the drive questions. You have a maximum of three drive bays so
disk expansion is no problem. Additions and swap-outs are pretty
quick. If your installation is networked, you shouldn't have to care
about the disks since your server(s) should take care of it (they are
Novell-certified). I think RAM is from IBM but their prices have
dropped and there are lots of 3rd party mail-order companies that can
provide you with what you need.
> 4) Will the Windows NT Beta run on it?
Yes. Make sure you have the Oct92 beta and install a CD-ROM first so
you don't have to sit there and flip disks. All ValuePoints with 486
CPUs ship with pre-installed OS/2 2.00.1 by the way.

No normal program can share IRQ's, including UUPC/extended. Under
OS/2, however, UUPC/extended will use any IRQ you can configure; I use
IRQ's 2 (actually 9 as mapped on the bus), 3, and 4. I could also use
7, 5 is used by my mouse.
